How long should I allow for on site acclimation of my engineered wood floor before installing?1/22/2011 Engineered hardwood flooring generally does not require the detailed and strict acclimation required for solid wood floors. The thinner the wear layer the less acclimation required. However, we do recommend that all installers check the temperature and humidity of the environment which the flooring will be installed. The engineered flooring should be at a moisture content suitable for the environment which it will be installed. The “Equilibrium Moisture Content Chart” provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is available in our installation instructions. This should be used to determine the proper moisture content of the engineered wood floor.

Unfortunately, there is no 100% correct answer for how long to acclimate floors. A good “rule of thumb” is 7-10 days for installation over wood subfloors. If you have a moisture-meter on hand, you can test the wood; it should be at 11% moisture content or less (the goal would be the average of normal moisture content year round) The subfloor should be equally dry. Do not install wood over a wet or damp subfloor.

Some hardwoods (especially exotics like Brazilian Walnut) are very heavy. You need to spread the boxes out around the floor. Do not stack 1000 square feet of flooring in the center of a single room, or you run the risk of floor damage/collapse. Further, stacking boxes doesn’t support good acclimation. Instead, place all the boxes flat on the sub-floor.

Do not open the boxes or take the planks out until the wood floor is acclimated and ready to be installed. This process may take several days. Room temperature and humidity level in the installation environment is a major part of the acclimation process. The humidity level must stay consistent during the life of the wood floor.
